Small baby items you must get for Newborn to 6 Months

There are so many things a baby will need that I will try to list as much as I can within my posts to help new moms, existing moms, families of soon-to-be moms. In this post, I talk about a lot of stuff I use for my daughter. I did buy these items or they were given as gifts from family/friends that I will talk about and they are not sponsored. I found a lot of things by browsing Amazon and finding what I could use for her that will make it a little easier for me.

FEEDING

I am going to start off with bottles and feeding items. In a previous post I talked about the bottles I liked to use, the NUK Simply Natural and the NUK Simply Fit. There are great and the NUK Simply Fit works great for the first few months when they are drinking under 5 oz, then they work for small feedings or water during solid food time.  The NUK Simply Natural is good for when they get older and drinking more but they will still work for when they are eating a small amount. There are also these Nuby Two Handle No-Spill for when they reach 3+ months. They have handles so they can start learning how to hold a bottle and they can start feeding themselves supervised. The Nuby Two Handle also does not spill so when your little one is learning how to hold the bottle you don't have to worry about cleaning a giant mess.

After feeding your baby you will need to burp them. I used Dodo Babies Bury Cloths, they were really good and they are thick so it won't get on you if they spit up. Marina doesn't need to be burped anymore but they come in handy for cleaning up spit-up mess. If your baby is also on formula, these Philips AVENT Formula Dispensers are a great thing to have. You can put three servings of baby food in them for when you go out out of the house and need to feed the baby. I would have spare bottles in the diaper bag, a bottle of water, and this with formula. I also had an extra one to carry three different types of puffs in for when we went out.

When your baby starts eating solid foods you might want to have somewhere to put it. I wouldn't feed Marina directly from the container because if she didn't eat it all then the spoon will contaminate the remaining food (FDA). So, I would pour it into a bowl and feed her from these BoBo & Boo Bamboo Kids Bowls because they were easy to clean. There were also these Munchkin Stay Put Suction Bowls I would use that suction to a surface so they can't spill if your babes try to pick them up.  I used these Munchkin Soft Tip Spoons spoons because they were soft tips and nice on her gums.  Certain foods she preferred warm rather than room temperature so I would use these Munchkin White Hot Safety Spoons because they turn white when it is too hot for a baby's mouth and you would avoid burning them. You will also need bibs because babies are messy and when I could avoid a mess I do. I used regular bibs such as Dodo Bandanna Bibs most of the time, but there were times when she was giving me a hard time and spitting out the food because she was learning how to use her tongue and I would put one of these PandaEar Silicone Baby Bibs on her to collect the mess.

MOUTH & TEETHING

I didn't want to start on pacifiers because I know sometimes it would be a challenge, but I broke down one night when she was two weeks old and gave her one. It really helped her sleep better and calmed her down when she was upset. I used two different types, I used NUK Orthodontic Hard Pacifier (outer casing hard, silicone nipple) which is a hard pacifier and hurts when you step on it by accident, but really good and it is easier to clean than the next one. I would use the NUK Hard Pacifier for when we went out and if she dropped it I could clean it real quick. The second one I used was NUK Sensitive Orthodontic Pacifiers, I like these for when she is sleeping. She started rolling over a little into 3 months and I didn't want her to sleep on the hard plastic, so she would use the NUK Sensitive because they are a lot softer. They do take a little more effort to clean because they are silicone but that why I had two different types. Basically day and outings to nighttime pacifiers. With these get some BabyGoal Pacifier Clips, they allow you to hook the pacifier's onto their car seat, stroller, shirt and they really help out when you realize your house is a black hole and you lost 10 pacifiers in a week.

Teethers are very important and you are going to realize when their gums hurt you are going to hurt. Marina started around 3 months crying about her mouth, even though nothing was there I figure they were causing pain from under the gums because I could see the little tooth buds. I use a variety of teethers for her but these are my favorite. The first one is the Nuby Ice Gel Teether Keys because you can put it in the freezer and there are three on the hook so when one starts melting you can put another one in their mouth. There is this Itzy Ritzy Teething Mitt that was really cool because you strap it to their hand and let them naw on it. Marina wasn't a fan of it, she doesn't like stiff on her hand but she holds it and chews on it. Another one that she uses is the Itzy Ritzy Silicone Baby Teether, she has two of them a llama and a unicorn. I keep one in the living room on her play mat and the other in her crib. There are great and really easy for them to hold on their own.

I brush Marina's gums and have been since she was born with a baby toothbrush. I didn't like the milk sitting on her gums and wanted to get it off. I would use this Baby Banana Toothbrush and I have several of them all over the house. Marina got to a point where she would hold it in her mouth and chew on it herself. When babies start eating solids it because more important that they brush their gums to get excess food off them.

TOYS

Baby toys, they don't play much as a newborn but I always had something for Marina to play with and try to grab and use her hands. These are some of mine and her favorites that she still plays with now at 7 months old. She has so many toys, so I narrowed it down. This Skip Hop Silver Lining Rattle was really great because it was different textures and she liked how the pieces would move around. This First Years Rattle was her favorite during month 2. She would just keep it there and would smile when I shake it, I think it was because the colors and some parts are crunchy. This Manhattan Toy Whoozit thing is creepy when you first see it, but it actually has a lot going on that babies catch onto and enjoy. The biggest thing I noticed was on the back it is black and white and it helps babies focus. These Manhattan Toy Links-to-go I started using when she was around 3 weeks I believe, they have different textures and help the baby grip. This Manhattan Toy Winkle Rattle & Sensory Teether Toy is great, and I have two of them. One for her play area and one in her crib. They help your baby grip and they are soft so they can chew on them.

Plush toys, Marina loves this Skip Hop Bandana Buddies Fox, I bought for her during the fall and she loves the crunchy ears and the teething leaf. It is a cute toy and offers a lot to a baby. Here is the Infant Going GaGa Spiral Car Seat Activity Toy, I use it for longer car rides so keep her busy and for her to play with and I am glad I have it because its hard to drive with a bored baby.

I am adding books under the toys. There are soft books that can clip onto so many things. I would clip them to her play mat, car seat, stroller, basically every I could so when I was somewhere she would have something to play with. This one is the Baby Einstein High Contrast and I like it because of the black and white pattern to help her focus and the colors for baby's eyesight. I think it is attached to her car seat now. I bought this one because I remember reading the Very Hungry Caterpillar when I was a kid. These soft cooks are crunchy and makes like to touch them because it makes noise. As for regular books, it is very important to read to babies. Marina loves to slap the books as I read to her, which I try to do once or twice a day. Her favorite book is Good Night Baby!

Bath Time

Baths, I still wont give her a bath alone, her dad has to be there with me, I'm always afraid I will reach for something and she'll jump out I don't know it make me nervous. I use the First Years Sure Comfort Newborn to Toddler Tub I talked about before. I purr the water over her I use this Munchkin Rinser, it's silicone so you can squeeze it between the baby and the sides of the tub. Baby towels, depending on how many bath you give and how often you do laundry you might want to have a few of these around. I have bought some from a lot of places and you can really get them anywhere, but when you buy them make sure they are soft. These Luvable Friends Hooded Towels are nice and soft. I use two towels when I give her a bath, one for when she gets out and a quick dry then another one to fully dry her off.  Rags, you will need something to wash your baby, again these can be bought anywhere even the dollar stores and they are actually nice. There are these Spasilk 10 Pack on Amazon which I believe I have, all are mixed in a bin together but you want the terry cloth rags.

HOUSEHOLD & PERSONAL CARE

You will need to do laundry, babies have sensitive skin and need something for babies. I use Dreft Liquid Baby Laundry Detergent for Marina. It has never bothered her skin and it smells fresh. For a while I was wondering why I  was running out of it so fast and my guy was using it for his clothes cause he liked the smell. I also get the Dreft Booster BeadsDreft Booster Beads to add that extra smell to keep it smelling fresh for longer.

Cutting your babies finger and toe nails is important so they don't scratch themselves. I have used a few different brands of nail clippers but my favorite is Safety 1st Steady Fold Up Nail. They are small and they are easier to use so they won't cut the skin around the nail. I have a lot of them because somehow I misplace them and when you need one you can't find it. You will also need a hair brush! Any should be okay but I use Safety 1st Easy Grip Brush for Marina's hair because it is a very soft brush.  Marina had dry skin on her head and gets it every once in a while so I would just gently rub her head with a brush and it would just flake off.  Sometimes your baby will get a fever and you need to make sure you have a thermometer on hand so you can keep on eye on it. Their temperature is better checked through their butts, I use Keenhealth Baby Thermometer and I also get Probe Covers and HR Pharma Lubricating Jelly single packs. Putting one in their mouth is hard, dangerous and you can get inaccurate readings.

Their nose, you shouldn't shove your finger in babies nose so if you didn't know that, well now you do. These Safety 1st Nasal Aspirator are great and you get to suck out all the fun stuff going on in their nose. I had several of them, in about every room because you never know when your baby has some boogers going on.

BEDDING

Babies only really need crib sheets and changing table sheets until they are over a year. They don't need the fancy stuff because it could be dangerous. I use Everyday Kids Sheets, they are soft and they are simple and hypoallergenic and make sure you have a couple on hand because of spit up and baby sweat. For changing table sheets I get TILLYOU Soft Changing Pad Cover  because they are easy to clean and soft.

I do have a lot of various blankets for Marina. First I have Muslin Blankest because they are really light weight and they are good for the summer time or hot days and swaddling. I can't find the exact one's I bought but these Tosnail Muslin Baby Blankets are the same thing. I also have a lot of receiving blankets. I used Simply Joys by Carter's Receiving Blanket when she was first born to swaddle her in and put over her while she was sleeping to keep her warm. They also work great for car seats to tuck under their legs and to clean up spit up. I also have some thicker blankets like Hudson Baby Blanket, these I use when it is colder, or when she is laying on the floor I will put one under her or cover her up with it. Babies will just fall asleep in random places I just try to keep her comfy. All are really good to have laying around and have multiple of them. When she is in her crib she sleeps with no blankets.

Accessories

When your little one comes home you might need to have a little hat on them because their body temperature escapes from their head. It is always good to have some hats around. I used Gerber Caps and they worked great for when I brought her home and took her out of the house. During the winter time I ended up getting Winter Beanie to keep her head and ears warm when outside.  You will need mittens when they are a newborn so they don't scratch their little face. I bought several packs of Gerber Baby Mittens, and I still use them for when I take her outside so her hands don't get as cold.  I also got her thicker Winter Mitten Gloves to keep her hands from getting cold. I had a fear of a toe catching and her getting hurt because they were so tiny so I kept socks on her most of the time. I would buy some anywhere I went because they disappear and I could never have enough socks. I used these Simply Joys Carter's but also long as your baby's feet are warm then any brand will work. Also, their little feet get so cold and I tried keeping her warm and cozy as much as I could.

Another important thing to get are sunglasses. It is not fun to have the sun shinning in your eyes. I had a few of these Baby Solo Sunglasses laying around, they were in the diaper bag, car, at home, I tried keeping them in places where I would need them. This Shynerk Baby Car Mirror is really cool to have for your baby since they need to be rear facing you would be able to see them in the review mirror while in the car. Marina usually falls straight to sleep once we get in the car but it's nice to glance at her to make sure she is okay.

Miscellaneous

Here are some random things that I loved. When it was windy, rainy or I took her to the doctors, I would put this YooFoss Baby Car Seat Cover over her car seat to keep her safe and cozy. It could also be used as a breastfeeding scarf.  I wouldn't want people looking at her at the doctors office and her catching something. There is this Skip Hop Shopping Cart Cover that goes in carts and high chairs at restaurants. I don't know what germs are on these carts at the store even if you wipe them down and she chews on her hand. So, I would put this on the cart and push her around after wiping it down.  Stinky diapers, I get these Munchkin Diaper Bag Refills (I don't have the dispenser I had them in all her bags and changing room. They pull right off with no issue). and would put her stinky diapers in them when we were out and about. I don't like making a whole room smell because of her diapers so they mask the smell. I also had several bottles of Bath and Body Works Anti Bacterial Hand Gel everywhere because I didn't know what germs I was touching when I went places and I didn't want her catching anything bad.

Various wipes I use, I have a lot of Wet One's in the diaper bags, home, car, they are everywhere. I use them to wipe down surfaces and I do go to a lot of restaurants and I wipe down the area where she will be and after I use a menu, or even when people want to hold her or play with her. They better wipe their nasty hands down before touching her. Face wipes, I use these Aveeno Baby Hand & Face Baby Wipes because they are more gentle than regular baby wipes and it's easy to clean their hands and face with them. Munchkin Arm and Hammer Pacifier Wipes, these come in handy when a pacifier falls on the floor or looks like it needs to be cleaned. If your out of the house and you only have one pacifier and it falls on the floor you should just consider your day over.

That is it! I hope this helps everyone find everything you need for your little baby!
